The Malibu Open Waterski Championship and Summer Festival returns to Veterans Park Lagoon June 21 and 22.
Waterskiing's top professional and junior athletes compete in traditional slalom and long-distance jumping for $64,000 in prize money.
Skiers from 31 countries are expected to compete including the world's top-ranked slalom skier, Will Asher of England. In slalom skiing, an athlete is tethered to a boat with a 43-foot rope while the boat travels at a constant 36 miles per hour. Athletes must navigate a six-buoy course by shortening the rope for each pass. To win, the skier must round the most buoys with the shortest line length.
Other highlights include free-style jumping, barefoot skiing, a kid's zone, a bikini fashion show and live music from the Screaming Cucumbers. Festival vendors will have wares from ski-related items to beer and food trucks.
